Even though poverty rates and inequality have increased somewhat recently, Denmark has remained among the countries with the lowest levels of poverty and inequality. However, under this surface of relative stability there has been a substantial social polarisation in the larger Danish cities. This study based on register data reveals that in the city of Aarhus there has been significantly increased inequality, and fast growing poverty rates, in particular among ethnic minorities, from 1983-2007. From a policy perspective this was to be expected due to significant changes in welfare policy since 2002. The most recent political initiatives in 2011, however, raise more optimistic prospects for the future.
