    Abstract

Education, as a societal practice, is aimed at supporting human development. Formal curricula are understood to be a means toward that end, and not an end in itself. That is, curricula are meant to express the qualities and capabilities that students are supposed to acquire as a consequence of educational actions. In practice, a curriculum does not provide much analytic insight for how to realise the ideals which they express, nor does it provide insight into the interactions that arise as students engage with the content of the curriculum. To illustrate how a cultural-historical perspective can be used to conceptualise the elaboration and concretization of a formal curriculum, an example of radical-local teaching and learning is presented. The key point is the need to create conditions for subject-matter learning that supports personality development. This perspective provides useful principles for elaborating curricular content in a way that can realise educational ideals.
