    Abstract

Danish law on social services indicates that develoment opportunities for the weakest citizens must be enhanced.
As a part of this, support has beeb granted to practices using the recovery ideology based on the conviction that individuals suffering from a serious psychiatric disorder will be given the oppertunity to recover.
The purpose of this projekt is to analyze the consequences for residents and staff in a social psychiatric housing project when implementing recovery in relation to self-understanding, social identity and interrelations.
In addition, the importance of the physical frames of the institution is examined and thereby the prospects of the residents to develop greater autonomy.
By using an anthropological and theoretical mindset it is concluded that identity is changeable, and that change combined with departing from identity as a mentally afflictet person, may cause ambivalent reations in the patients and cause dilemmas for the social staff in their daily work.It is shown that the institutional frames have a limiting influence on individuel development work, wich again is shown to be dependent on the goodwill of the surrounding society.
