Transition - children as caravane leaders of the community

Abstract

In a Danish context, a new model for school enrollment is being tested these years. Contrary to the dominant practice of starting school in August, the model works with flexibility in terms of when children make the transition from to school. Thus, some children start in May, others in August, and some in November. Rather than standardizing school readiness as a baseline to be met in August, the ambition behind the model is to rework the practice of the school to make it encompass children when they are ready to make the transition.

Based on fieldwork, we explore: Which ideas of community are produced and anticipated as part of this organizational practice for school enrollment and transition? In which ways are children described and distinguished into three categories as parents and kindergarten teachers join efforts to decide when the child should begin school life?
