Abstract

Viborg 1146 is a VR experience that creates identification and understanding across time connecting you and me in the present with people in different times and places. How can we connect to our historical past, so it feels more present and relevant? How can we bring spectators to better understand the narratives that have led us forward to the society of today? To pick up the challenge we used virtual reality to create an experience that enhances the feeling of the past in audible and visible ways. By making a direct connection, viewers, feel like being there and actively relate to the past, understanding it in a new context.
The experience brings visitors to a mental space to make them reflect about their past and the past of pasts through the story of Jan and Tove. Jan leaves his coat always on the couch, while Tove would like him to hang it on the coat hanger at home. Their quarrel hides traces of family history that they both are made aware of. Likewise, Viborg 1146 unravels traces of the past history of this city, once land of Kings and princes and theater of a bloody civil war that split Denmark and poured the base of what this country is today. Visitors have the opportunity to experience a glimpse of Viborg’s past through a pair of VR goggles and once the experience ends they can walk to that same land they just saw with renewed knowledge and curiosity. What other traces will we find? What coats and what couches?
Viborg 1146 uses new technologies to open doors to the experience of history. The prototype is an experimental model that can be proposed to future cultural partners and projects, wishing to make this form of virtual tourism or Time on Time-based dissemination of local history.
