Description
Since October 7th, 2023, all 12 universities in Gaza have been bombed and destroyed, resulting in the deaths of thousands of students, professors, and deans. At the same time, several universities in the West Bank have been targeted and raided by the Israeli military, leading to the detention of several students. Israel's systematic attacks on academic institutions and the destruction of the education system in Palestine are not a new phenomena but a pattern dating back to the Nakba in 1948, and it was conceptualized under the term 'Scholasticide' in 2009.But what does the concept of 'Scholasticide' entail? How does it relate to the concept of 'genocide'? These questions will be central to the discussion as Students Against the Occupation and NASIM invite Martin Stub-Holm El-Toukhy from 'Scholars Against the War on Palestine' to talk about the systematic attacks on academic institutions in Palestine.
Martin Stub-Holm El-Toukhy (MSc in Social Sciences and Visual Culture) is an assistant professor in social sciences at UCL University College in Odense (Bachelor of Social Work). He has several years of experience in NGO-based social work with refugees and asylum seekers. He has also introduced the term scholasticide in the Danish public debate on Israel's war on Gaza. His talk on scholasticide is an expression of his own views and not in any ways affiliated with the official position of UCL University College.
Talk @ University of Copenhagen, Center for Samfund og Sundhed (CSS).
