Iterations 2023

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesWorkshop

Noise, shape, color

In this workshop, Stig will pick up on the ideas presented in his talk on the first day of the symposium. Here, he discussed his teaching approach of using pre-existing graphic design products as "objects to think with" to help novice coders work towards a fixed goal and pick up valuable tricks and techniques along the way.The "object to think with" chosen for this workshop is the cover design of the Japanese quarterly magazine IDEA issue 377 (2017), designed by Kensaku Kato & Seigo Kitaoka.

Stig will guide the workshop participants through the deconstruction of the cover and introduce the code elements needed to reconstruct it. This includes: Perlin Noise fields, Randomness distribution (uniform vs. non-uniform), SVG shapes, Color palette generation

By the end of the workshop, participants will have a better grasp of the covered topics and how they can be combined to create a variety of new designs. By adjusting the variables, shapes, and colors, attendees will be able to generate a multitude of unique designs based on the code generated in the workshop.
