Personal profile

Research and development areas

In my research, I am interested in Bildung (formation) and the philosophical and theoretical integration of the concept of Bildung with other sociological and critical theories. I am also concerned with the social determinations of Bildung and its contribution to the development of democratic citizenship. Accordingly, my research engages with the relationship between the concept of Bildung and issues of social justice and human emancipation. I also explore questions relating to humanity’s relationship with nature, diversity, equality and inequality, as well as how different forms of injustice are founded, reproduced, and can be challenged within educational and pedagogical contexts. In continuation of this I also examine how democracy, inequality, and marginalisation is adressed through educational policy.

Current research interests:

  • Educational policy and inequality
  • Critique of “spiritual armament” as a concept and pedagogical ideal
  • Democratic values under pressure
  • Hegel’s dialectic at the intersection between Bildung thinking and critical theory
  • Democratic Bildung from a critical and non-affirmative perspective
