Research and development areas

Reader/Docent and joint head of research into social work with children, young people and families at the Institute for Social Work since 2015. Author or co-author of 27 internationally published peer-reviewed studies into social work and counselling and 4 book chapters. PhD assessor of 15 PhDs outside Denmark. Thomas conducts research and development projects that are joint ventures between University College Copenhagen, local municipalities, and the foundations that fund projects.  Thomas plays a key role in securing funding for studies. Thomas is presently working on projects concerning:

-          Implementing and developing ways of focusing on outcomes and alliances in everyday family statutory social work.   

-          Supporting statutory family social work via video-based supervision and other formats.

-          Developing models of quality in statutory social work. 

-          Developing technology that can support young people and families.

-          The challenges of using digital technology in statutory social work.

-          Supporting youth with symptoms of anxiety and depression in an employment setting.

Thomas’ ambition is to develop an empirical base for statutory child, youth and family social work, that can be used to develop practice and educate professionals in the field, and thereby improve conditions for vulnerable children, youth, and families.  Thomas is a state authorized psychologist, accredited specialist and supervisor in psychotherapy, and holds a PhD in clinical psychology from Copenhagen University. Prior to working with research, Thomas spent ten years working with children, young people and families as a clinical psychologist and consultant in a range of public and private settings. Thomas is a member of the European Social Work Research Association, the Society for Psychotherapy Research and is on the editorial board for Counselling Psychology Quarterly.
