Description
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Global Citizenship Education are UNESCO’s educational response to the planet’s urgent challenges. SDG 4 Target 4.7 says: “By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development”.
This goal reflects a commitment to equip learners with the knowledge and agency needed to create a sustainable and just future for our planet and its inhabitants.
Developing ESD calls for development and application of pedagogical designs which empower learners to influence and carry out sustainable actions. In VIA, we are engaged in this work through the TEACH4SD-project (https://teach4sd.eu/). In this project, we study educational designs and teaching practices within health education in two Danish institutions, one HEI and one VET. Our main research interest is related to understanding how pedagogical designs are put to use in concrete teaching and learning-contexts, and how design principles may or may not give direction to the teaching and learning-practices.
In this project, we work with the following research question: How do teachers design for and carry out competence development-activities to empower the participants to develop and apply ESD in their curriculum and / or teaching practices?
The study applies ethnographically inspired methods and is based on qualitative data, - mainly observation data from design workshops and teaching activities as well as document analysis of teaching materials and learner products.
