Power Plays – preventing sexual harassment through memory work & forum theater in workplaces of care

An emerging research field on the prevention of sexual harassment points to the need for developing more context-sensitive knowledge of experiences of sexual harassment as well as to the need for concrete research-based prevention tools applicable to changing workplace cultures and counter sexual harassment. Based on an integrated re-vitalization of memory work and forum theater, the Power Plays project will contribute nuanced contextual narrative cases of experienced sexual harassment in workplaces of care across Denmark, Sweden and Finland. Grounded in this insight, the Power Plays project will develop a range of ‘plays’ to be enacted in a forum theater manner as a safe, bodily and playful way of promoting safe workplace cultures and anti-sexual harassment literacy. In this way, the Power Plays project contributes an innovative bottom-up approach and an interactive add-on tool to existing prevention work by developing a highly context sensitive and adaptive prevention toolbox that facilitates safe spaces of sharing as well as imagining and rehearsing alternative workplace cultures free from sexual harassment – or at least prone to actively prevent and/or deal with sexual harassment. The Power Plays prevention toolbox will be tested and implemented at a variety of workplaces of care and disseminated through an independent website as well as through major care workers’ associations as a plug-&-play tool ready to be used in the care sector across the Nordic region.
