Abstract

The majority of schools in Scandinavia provide one digital device to each student and ICT and digital learning resources play a major role in everyday teaching in primary and secondary schools. One-to-one computing allows pupils to work with a wide range of digital tools and resources. And producers of teaching material provide new hybrid educational texts and we see the outline of a new ecology of educational resources fora wide range of different school subjects.
In this symposium, we propose that in order tograsp the complexity of the field of ICT-usage in schools, we need to both be specific about the purpose and kind of tools and resources we are talking about and inclusive about what types of research and outcomes we consider.
We present four papers that give different perspectives on ICT and education: - An inclusive approach to a literature review of empirical studies that assess the impact of a wide range of ICT-materials. - A presentation of coherence and levels of didacticization of resources from four major learning material systems for Ll in lower secondary school. - An empirical study of the use of learning resources in classrooms with a well established 1:1 computing practice. - An observational study of teachers' use of different learning materials in Ll teaching.
The papers stem from four research projects conducted in Denmark and Norway 2019-2021 and data consist of video observations, interviews, teaching materials and, in addition, a large scale, international review of research on impact of ICT in education.
Together these four presentations conceptualize the role of digital teaching material and provide empirical data shedding light on the tensions in the new digital "ecology" in one-to-one classrooms.
The four presentations will provide a foundation for discussing the foliowing subjects: - How con we grasp the complexity of the new ecology of learning resources? - What demands are placed on teachers to adapt digital texts and resources? - How con teachers re-contextualize non-didactic digital texts within the frame of each school subject? - What characterizes Scandinavian digital learning resources produced for purposes of teaching and how are they used in classrooms?
