Abstract
Since sustainability is a fuzzy and vague concept, developing tools for sustainable business models is a complex task. Ability to collect and process large amount of data – and analyzing that data using generative AI, is in many aspects a promising route to a more sustainable world. However, one problem remains. Without a universally accepted measure for all sustainability goals, data and AI cannot help us with the overriding problem: the problem of weighing off different goals. Focusing on what data can be collected and ignoring the weighing problem may lead to only incremental sustainability improvements at a potential high cost, in a situation where we need transformational change. We argue that there is a need for theoretical structure in sustainability assessment to address the weighing problem and to assure that we concentrate efforts to create maximum impact on sustainability challenges at the lowest cost for human welfare (prosperity). Adding theoretical structure, however, does not reduce complexity. We introduce a generative AI tool to cope with the complexity of assessing and developing sustainable business models.
