Abstract

The exhibited dyed and printed textiles are part of a larger study aiming to challenge the textile industry’s use of commercial dyes by using food waste as alternative dyes.
The goal was to achieve international standards for washing, rubbing and staining of the dyes, but as the study progressed, the question changed because textiles dyed with food waste are photosensitive. This means that exposed to UV light they change color faster than conventional dyes. We therefore asked: How can we work with the design in such a way that we can contribute to the textiles achieving a longer life in the use phase without losing aesthetic value?
The textiles in the exhibition are the result of two questions.
1. How many times can the same dye bath from red onion
skin be reused?
2. How can we work with layers in mordant printing,
considering that the textile owner (consumer) can contribute to
changing the aesthetics of the textile in the user phase?
