Abstract
Background: There is a continuous need to improve occupational health and safety (OHS), especially in high-risk industries. While education and training are often used as interventions to address safety issues, research on OHS interventions has established that unless these interventions are integrated into broader organisational changes, OHS education and training does not improve health and safety in the long term. However, the value of education and training of employees is not only dependent on the integration of individual and organizational aspects of OHS. It is equally important to qualitatively address how the content and methods or working mechanisms is intended to bring about the aim of the intervention especially focusing on bringing forth workers’ experiences of risk and safety to make health and safety initiatives meaningful, applicable, and effective – not only for management but for workers as well.
