Abstract

The concluding remarks summarize the book’s central themes related to the pathways to children and young people’s participation that children, young people, and adults forge. It argues that “participation generators”—the conditions that promote children’s participation—include a participation ethic, facilitative and transformative authority, and participatory skills and methods. Legal, policy, and practice contexts can generate a participation ethic and create facilitative and transformative power. Participatory skills and strategies build emotional bonds and horizontal relations between children and adults and counter biases and stigmas about certain groups of children or children in general. They generate time, space, and logistical support for children’s participation and promote the capacity building of children and professionals.
