Danish occupational therapy practice: a survey

Background: Occupational therapy is often described as a profession centered around occupation in terms of performance, experience, and participation. Still, clinical practice is diverse and might also reflect interventions based on other paradigms. Aim: To examine current occupational therapy practice in Denmark. Methods: A comprehensive national online survey with questions guided by the Occupational Therapy Intervention Process Model (OTIPM) was conducted. The survey was distributed broadly on social medias and by email. Occupational therapists employed outside the field of occupational therapy were excluded. Descriptive statistics were applied. Results: 421 occupational therapists participated; 96% were females. Almost one third (n=133, 31%) reported to use less than 50% of their working hours on occupational therapy focused on occupation within the past month. More detailed results will be presented. Conclusions: The results provide important information on the current occupational practice in Denmark, including examples on how occupational therapists practice based on reasoning informed by other paradigms outside the profession including the biomedical paradigm.
