Abstract
Delirium is an acute brain dysfunction and a common complication to illness in the geriatric and frail populations. Delirium is – if not prevented, detected, and treated - associated with short and long-term consequences such as death, loss of functions, and cognitive decline. Nursing home residents are at high risk of developing delirium in relation to age, co-morbidities, and polypharmacy. By recognizing delirium, a
cause must be identified, and interventions take place. We hypothesis that delirium is a quality indicator for care and a key factor keeping nursing homes residents physically and mentally stabile and out of hospital.
