Abstract

Background

Obesity rates has increased despite a wide range of weight-loss programmes (WLPs). But do the WLPs match the obese individuals (OIs) wishes?

Objective

To concept a WLP led by occupational therapists to enhance resilience and empower OIs to loose weight and strive for participation in meaningful activities and increase quality of life (QoL) we sought to study if the wishes to a WLP were comparable among OIs and health professionals (HPs).

Methods

82 interviews with OIs and HPs were carried out and analysed, and their wishes to a WLP compared.

Results

Both groups found that social support from close network, peers and HPs is fundamental for an effective WLP, however only 20% of the HPs included the close network. Also, the OIs underpin the importance of including meaningful activities and everyday life, which was not systematically integrated in the WLPs by the HPs.

Conclusions

The focus on a WLP is not entirely comparable among OIs and HPs. But integrating social support, meaningful activities and everyday life will might increase weight-loss, resilience and QoL if the voices by the OIs should count the most.
