Abstract

The Danish term ‘Udeskole’ is a broad term referring to curriculum-based teaching where the teacher on a regular base makes use of learning activities outside the classroom, in natural as well as in cultural sett ings. Since 2013 related terms like open school, various teaching, practical teaching and physical activity have been manda-tory principles for school teaching in Denmark.Based on hermeneutic content analysis this article presents an empirical investiga-tion of teachers ́ pedagogical intentionality when using udeskole. I have analyzed 148 descriptions of udeskole lectures that are designed, completed and described by teachers from 66 Danish schools. Thereby I seek to validate a theoretically founded categorization of didactical intentions in udeskole-activities named as: ‘physical activity’, ‘action-accompanied language study’ and ‘place-based learning’. A major-ity of the cases fall into the second category. These results call for a need of a further categorization of the second category, for a specifi cation of subject-specifi c out door teaching didactics as well as for place-oriented pedagogical methods.
