    Abstract

While Spillane and colleagues have clearly defined “distributed leadership” as an analytic lens for
understanding that leadership is distributed across individuals in both formal and informal
leadership positions, and it arises out of the spaces between individuals through their interactions, many researchers have misapplied the term to emphasize the process of distributing leadership. This paper utilizes the original concept of distributed leadership as defined by Spillane and colleagues to focus on the tasks of leadership.
