Abstract
The deep Danish onshore subsurface contains hugegeothermal resources, but only a very limited fractionof these resources are utilized. At the Thisted plantdeep situated warm formation water is pumped to thesurface from a production well and, after heat istransferred to the district heating system, the cooledwater is returned to the reservoir through injectionwell(s). To stimulate the exploitation of the geothermalresource and thus the transformation to a moresustainable energy mix in Denmark the researchproject GEOTHERM (under the Innovation FundDenmark) has thoroughly evaluated seismic reflectionsurveys and well data acquired during formerhydrocarbon and geothermal exploration activities.The results of the last years research and geologicalassessments presented in a public available WebGISportal have reduced the exploration risks significantlyand has stimulated the interest from the industryleading to newly awarded exploration licenses. Thisdevelopment in combination with the existing highimplementation of district heating in Denmark ispromising for a much larger utilization of geothermalheat in Denmark.
