Abstract

This article challenges a widespread performance-oriented approach to traditional team sport disciplines in PE and contributes to didactic research in team games. Through a case study, we examine students' experiences of an intervention aimed at changing the motivational climate in PE from a focus on performance to a focus on mastery. Using Lave and Wenger's theoretical perspectives, we show that a mastery- and learning oriented approach to team games and the development of new team games can strengthen students' prerequisites for and desire to participate. Further, we discuss challenges related to connecting PE with the sports and exercise environment outside.
