Abstract

The adjective “complex” is used frequently to describe health and healthcare services. We talk about complex interventions being delivered in complex
organizations to patients suffering from complex diseases. Thus, the executive
order for Danish Nursing Education concludes that healthcare has become more
complex and hospitalized patients are sicker. To cope effectively and adequately
with the challenges of modern healthcare, prepared and qualified nurses are
needed. The question is: What characterizes situations that are described as
complex by students during clinical training? In this chapter, we examine how
nursing students describe complexity in clinical work. The empirical starting point
is interviews with Danish nursing students conducted in the spring of 2020. We
conclude that, from an educational point of view, more focus on repetition and
learning-by-doing during basic training may help graduates to become more competent and experienced in handling the complexity of clinical work
