Learning the complexity of Building Information Modelling in an educational setting

The purpose of this small study is to investigate, how the educational setting at an architectural technology and construction management programme, prepares its’ graduates to aid the construction industry in its effort to cross the gap of missed opportunities and unfulfilled potentials in regards to the concept Building Information Modelling (BIM).
The BIM concept is investigated through an activity theoretical lens. This allow for an understanding of the complexity of the concept. Observations from an educational setting is presented and analyzed using the understanding gained from the theoretical framework. The educational setting presents the students with the barriers to BIM implementation from the industry. Unintentionally, the educational setting trains the students to respond to the barriers in a similar way as can be found in the industry. The complexity of BIM caused by its’ impact on the organizational categories; rules, communities and division of labor as well as the need for collaboration across occupations calls for re-thinking the educational setting in which it is taught.
