Abstract

The Danes are one of the most registered populations in the world. Since 1968, a personal identification number (colloquially referred to as 'CPR') has been assigned to all Danes. This ten- digit number is being used on a daily basis throughout society: at administrative offices, banks, hospitals, dentists, libraries, schools, and workplaces - but always linked to a utilitarian purpose: identification, payment, reservation, etc. This Artware8 contribution explores how CPR can also be used for decorative purposes. The paper outlines how the CPR's numerical sequence, through the use of mathematics, digitized art museum collections, and creative coding, can be used as a "personal key" to generate a society-owned yet highly individualized digital artwork. Subsidiarily, possible learning points are identified to highlight the potential of transforming the artwork's underlying concept into an explorative exercise for use in introductory programming courses in design schools.
