Kapitlet indledes med refleksioner over begrebet mestring. Dernæst præsenteres tre teoretikere, der på hver deres måde har beskæftiget sig med mestring: Arthur Kleinman, Aaron Antonovsky og Richard S. Lazarus. Teorierne relateres til en case.
