The subject of this project is the educator as social worker. The new ministerial order regarding educators training demands more specialism, a demand that seems to make an inquiry into relation between social work theory and social work necessary. What characterizes the object and the field of knowledge of this profession? What defines the theory, the methods and the ethics of this Profession? And what will the result of the specialization of the educators profession be on a bildung-related level of reflection?
The evolution of the social politics of the 19th and 20th century, culminating with the development of the welfare state, is examined as the material background for social work theory. The historical development of social work theory is examined by an analysis of the patterns sedimentated in both broad and narrow conceptions of what constitutes social work theory. The relation of social work theory to social work is illustrated and an exposition of different conceptions of social problems as the object the scientific field of the profession is given. The subject is approached with support from the sociology of professions and the complex concept of knowledge implicit in social work theory is sought uncovered. Different theoretical and methodological are identified and the ethics of the professeion is seen in relation to the concept of recognition. Closing off an examination of the personal reasons motivating social workers to engage in social work – and the bildung-related reflections that follows from these – is made.
