Abstract

Background: Persons living with chronic conditions often have decreased ADL ability, stressing the need to develop and evaluate occupational therapy programs addressing their ADL problems. Guided by the British Medical Research Council’s guidance (MRC) on how to develop and evaluate complex interventions, the program “A Better everyday LifE” (ABLE) was developed and feasibility tested. According to the MRC guidance the next stage will involve evaluations of effect, processes and cost-effectiveness.

Objective: To design and describe effect, process and cost-effectiveness evaluations of the ABLE program.

Methods: The evaluation is designed as a Randomized Controlled Trial, initiated with an internal pilot study. Eighty participants are randomly allocated to either the ABLE program or usual care. Data are collected at baseline, post intervention, and six months after baseline.

Co-primary outcomes are self-reported ADL ability measured using the ADL-Questionnaire and observed ADL motor ability measured using the Assessment of Motor and Process Skills.

Results: A complete protocol for evaluation of the ABLE program, based on the MRC guidance.

Conclusion: The protocol represent the foundation of a transparent evaluation.
