    Abstract

This pilot study sought to find out the efficacy and effectiveness of a new combination of two therapeutic techniques in the research field of stress management and prevention: Eutony Psychophysical Education and Multimodal therapy.
31 nurses from a public Danish Hospital in Copenhagen participated; 20 constituted the empirical group and 11 constituted the control group. All of them were active at their work places throughout the entire project.
During the invention period of three months, they received a weekly group lesson of Eutony Psychophysical Education of 1 and ½ hour duration and one weekly individual session of 30 to 40 minutes duration. Either Eutony or Multimodal therapy was taught/used at the individual session, according to the expressed needs of the participants.
All participants answered self –reported Tests: STAI, JAS and VAS, both at the beginning and at the end of the process.
Also, individual semi-structured interviews were carried out at the beginning and at the end of the empirical period.
The results of the quantitative tests show significant difference in the scores of STAI and VAS.
The qualitative results from the analysis of the interviews focus on the participants descriptions of their own experiences and process of mastering their daily stress, both at work and at home.
At first, the participants described stress as a process and as a state in which they experienced an interruption of the interaction, the relation and communication between them (each individual) and the world around them. This interruption was the main characteristic of stress experience by this group.
The recovering and re-establishing of this connection, relation or harmony between the subject and the environment was experienced and achieved mainly through conscious body work (Eutony).
The originality of this project arises from the unique combination of multimodal therapy and Eutony Psychophysical education in relation to stress management.
There is no systematic study in which the combination of these two techniques has been tested before. From an historic view point, this is the first time that these two techniques are used together.
