Students’ reflections: Using video tools

Abstract

Our social educator education has been transformed into a competencies based education in accordance with the Bologna Process. That means a bigger focus on students’ professional acting. On the other side we have very little access to them in their internships. Only their own written reflections, which are more often than not the result of them trying to write what they think, we want to hear, and not their mistakes ect.
We have introduced a new way of reflecting with the students on their practice. A video platform called IRIS Connect.
The students film themselves using a mobile device (Iphone etc) and uploads it to a secure web-platform. Sharing the video with other students and teachers, we can have an online dialogue and apply different analysis ‘forms’. These ‘forms’ are ways of quantify certain aspects that we/the student want to highlight or focus on.
I will talk about our project and the way we have used it to advance the students’ reflections on their own practice in their internships.
In the second part, I would love to let the rest of the TIG members try it out for themselves.
