    Abstract

Facing an increasing prevalence of obesity and overweight in children and adolescents, which has achieved epidemic proportions (WHO 1998) and the fact that most recent therapeutic and preventive measures have failed, the present article focuses on the complex causal interactions at the physiological, sociological and psychological level. Using standardized data collection, the lives of ~2600 13-18-year old adolescents and their parents were investigated at the levels mentioned above in order to determine risk factors for overweight and obesity in adolescence. This age group is of particular relevance as overweight and obese adolescents have the highest risk to maintain this weight status in adulthood and prevention programs in comparison to other age groups (children, prepubescent) the greatest success perspective.
