Board influence and interaction with the university management

Beskrivelse
This chapter discusses the influence of boards and present different modes of interaction between boards and management, what influences this interaction, and how different modes of the interaction relate to board influence. The use of a bureaucratic mode of interaction will be attractive in a university setting. Performance management is a widespread management tool in public organizations—a popular fashion and organizations gain legitimacy by adopting the types of management tools. The analysis shows that Danish university boards have the most influence on economy and strategy and the least influence on content such as selection of research areas and educations offered by the university. The use of rules is fundamental to organizing and will be a part of a bureaucratic mode of interaction. The department heads and the board members evaluation of board influence are quite similar.
